Freedom Grove Dedicated
In May, 2007, JOEC dedicated a Freedom Grove on its
property to the memory of two early Camp Joy leaders, the Reverend
Maurice McCrackin and the Reverend Ulysses Fowler. These groves
are sponsored by the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Sand
Run Nursery & Preserve, and Paul Hemmer Companies. These groves
are living landmarks designed to provide generations of Americans an
opportunity to remember the individual lives of over four million slaves
and freedom fighters. This grove further enhances JOEC’s
relationship with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center,
which designated JOEC as one of its “Freedom Stations” in 2006.
