Leadership Team Bios
Mike McGinty, Executive Director
Mike became the Executive Director in 2002 after 7+ years at JOY
serving in the roles of Camp/Retreats Director, Student Leadership
Coordinator, and outdoor educator. Prior to his experience at JOY, Mike
built up his camping background at The Hole In The Wall Gang Camp, a
camp for children with cancer and blood diseases, as well as two Ohio
camps, Camp Akita and Camp Wanake. He holds a Masters Degree in
Nonprofit Management from Regis University and a B.S. Degree in

Mike Lawler, Director of Leadership & Development
Mike is
the newest member of JOEC’s leadership team. He became Director of
Leadership and Development in the fall of 2008. He brings to JOY
26 years of business experience. As a Senior Vice President in the
banking business he understands the needs, struggles and growth
opportunities many of our corporate clients are experiencing. Mike
brings a successful career of personnel and business development to
JOEC's Leadership and Development programs. Mike received his B.A.
in Psychology from Hobart
College in Geneva, NY. Mike’s passions away from work

Amy Thompson, Director of Youth Services
Amy became the Director in 2002 after two years as the Associate
Director of Camping and Retreats. She discovered her passion for the
camping field after two years at the YMCA of the Rockies. She has
completed her Master's in Recreation Management from the University of
North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a non-profit certificate from Duke
University. A former bobcat at Ohio University she has the mid-west at

Michelle Slocum, Finance Director
In addition to her educational background Michelle brings to Joy over
six years of non-profit experience in finance, human resources, and
operations and over ten years of accounting and marketing experience in
the for-profit sector. Her love for the outdoors came from photographing
nature during her travels across the US and while hiking and mountain
biking with her husband in the North Carolina mountains. Other hobbies
include kayaking and canoeing with her three schnauzers. Born and raised
in Charlotte, North Carolina Michelle is a tarheel at heart but admits
there is nothing like a white Christmas in the mid-west. Contact

Rob Miller, Facilities Director
Rob developed a love for building while assisting
his father on some building projects while growing up. Upon graduation
from high school, he went to work in the graphics arts industry for a
company in Cincinnati, Ohio for 12+ years, all the while doing building
& remodeling projects on the side. In 1996, he became a 50% partner of
MAIKER: Building & Remodeling. In 1999, after having served some of
JOEC’s building & remodeling needs as a private contractor, Rob became a
full time member of the maintenance department, where he continues to
accept the challenges of the facilities needs from day to day. Contact

Jon Slocum, Adventure & Safety Manager
Jon Slocum was born in Huntsville, Alabama.
He earned a B.S. degree in
business administration from the University
of North Carolina,
Charlotte. He has 15 years of business
experience, 13 years as a district/territory manager in the rental car
industry and two years in sales and advertising.
He is an instructor and division chair for the American Canoe
Association and teaches canoeing and kayaking.
He is a first aid and CPR instructor for the American Red Cross.
He is the Adventure & Safety Manager.
